Emergency lighting is one of the most critical yet often overlooked components of building safety. Annual tests are far more rigorous — each unit must operate for its full rated duration (typically 30 or 60 minutes for standard buildings, up to 2 hours for some occupancies).

Common failures found during testing include dead or degraded batteries (the most frequent issue), burnt-out lamps or LEDs, corroded connections, damaged heads or housings that affect light distribution, and transfer switch failures that prevent automatic activation.

Each of these failures means that in a real emergency, portions of your building could be in complete darkness. Statistics show that evacuation times increase dramatically in low-visibility conditions, and the risk of injuries from falls, collisions, and crowd crush rises sharply.
